We decided to burn our last Saturday before school in the swealtering heat at the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth. It was the Trains, Trucks and Tractors weekend which we haven't been to since God was a boy.
I'm required to say things like that, I live in the south.
We were pretty tame for the summer due to the financial constraints of not having a job but things are back on track and that's more of a relief than I can actually ever properly explain. It was nice to get out and feel like us again, soaking up the sunshine and the fun of big trucks, trains and climbing on tractors.
I've talked too many times about how I avoid being in pictures because of my massive case of body dysmorphia (ok I know I don't ACTUALLY look like Jabba but I feel like you think I do) but I can say I guess I don't hate that too much.
And we were having fun so maybe that's all I should worry about. I'll fail but you know. I can pretend.
Today's blog post is just a rambling mess without cohesion that's very self indulgent about a happy day out with my family. There can never be enough of these days in my world.
Their faces make me happy. Silly, happy, nevous, unsure - I love to look at them all and think about the adventures we had that day.
Today's post is a bookmark in my memory banks, of a day we were together and it was perfect.

A Day For Trains
Several years of my childhood were spent in a house that was as legally close to a railroad track as could be. The house shook and windows rattled every time the engines went blowing past the back of our house. I've often said that my brother's love of trains, and the reason he is an engineer now, is that his prenatal lullaby was the shaking and grumbling of Conrail.
My own boys love them though, so maybe it's just little boys who love trains. We went to the local rail museum to wander through cars in the middle of refurb and enjoy the blasts from the past, from days when rail travel was normal and not some exotic adventure.
The best part of this trip was probably when we walked into the shed and were surprised by who was working on the desk.
And some of our party were EXTREMELY excited to see him.
Trains are cool. Trains + Santa = UBER COOL.

Tractor Days!

I'm not sure what tractors have to do with trains, but the Southeastern Rail Museum held Tractor Days a few weeks ago and it was basically as much fun as little boys could have without their being puppies and candy involved too.
There were tractors of all shape and size and it was a fine game to watch them climb up them, if not heart stopping. WHEN did they get so agile? The Birth of Cool HAS no fear, he can climb up any tractor to get to the seat - it's mind boggling.

They had old school tractors and fancy tractors with AC and lotsa modern comforts as well. I think we all know though, that only real tractors are green. Those other colors - well, I don't know what those machines are. (insert grin).

They also had a UPS truck. I suppose UPS was a sponsor or something, because it was bizarrely out of place.

There were also tractor rides, and I felt bad that my little guys couldn't go but I wasn't comfortable letting them - they don't perceive danger well enough to remain safe in that seat and frankly, I can see either of them ending up under that tractor wheel. I just couldn't deal with it.

That's a weird thing that other people don't have to think much about, after a certain age. "Will my child plunge to his death because he has no sense of fear?"
Sigh, mine will (the twins). They don't get it. It makes them bold and strong but it also makes them reckless and prone to get hurt. It's like constantly guarding a baby.

Did I mention that there were trains?
