The Festival Of Deep Fried Foods on Sticks

Deep fried Milky Way on a stick and deep fried Pecan Pie, both drizzed in caramel
There isn't anything better than fair time, because the ridiculous new foods and the old favorites are there for mass consumption and enjoyment of all. We like the animals, we like the rides, but really when it all comes down to it, we're there for the festival of EAT.

We ended our day this year with deep fried Milky Way - which is now a staple rather than nouveau, and something different - deep fried Pecan Pie. I give the pecan pie a B, it wasn't completely done, and although it was still good because the pie inside was cooked, it was cold in one small spot.

But still, pecan pie. WIN.
Roasted corn, accompanied by fresh squeezed lemonade - that I suspect to be Country Time - is also a required staple food. I'm a fan of shaking Parmesan cheese on mine.
The twisted fries are good, especially with baco-bits (NOT bacon, bacon's lesser cousin) and cheese food product from a can.  They're like - this hot potato chips. With fake cheese and fake bacon.

The girl was ecstatic at all the "nummy treats" as she calls them and the fun rides she got to do. She had just finished riding a dinosaur in the above picture, so how can that be bad?
The twins loved it too, if they look a little pensive above - it's because we are sitting next to the speak for the Haunted house. SPOOOOOKY noises are blaring right near us, and they are trying to sort out what it is.

Now that we've been to the fair, fall is landing on us hard. Cold drizzly rain, very chilly mornings, all of these things have started with regularity. I'm glad really. Summer was long and hot. I am ready for some cold.

Fair Food and Fun

Before I was so unbelievably sick, before the flu and this damn UTI came knocking on top of my already present morning sickness and overall pregnant and Forty-ness......we went to the fair. We have a pretty ok little fair here. You'd really expect more, if you were from the midwest and accustomed to huge fair events - which we are.

But it's ok. You know there are the animals....

and heck even the Little Birth of Cool braved petting some of the critters.

This slide pic is one of my faves. The big boy was the student of the week, and got to bring home his class mascot.
So we took it to the fair - and he took it on rides and through fun houses and the like.
But you know as always, the good stuff is the fair food. I was a little disappointed at the lack of deep fried foods on sticks, frankly. Florida fairs have MUCH better selections!

My corn dog was nasty, and I think I'm going to swear off of them. The twins didn't seem to mind theirs - but we checked theirs and it seemed just fine. I got the funky one.

The best meat product we had was this delicious grilled chicken.
Mmmmm this is deep fried cheese cake with caramel sauce. But when is one dessert enough at the fair? NEVAH! So we also had deep fried Milky Ways.

And, I learned at the end of the night .......that my son is a Sith Lord. Who knew?

Well You See.........

Every day, the biggest boy comes home from Kindergarten and regales us with tales of his day. Was it music, art or gym? Who did you play with at recess? Did you have a good day?

We're fascinated.

Because he's away, making his own decisions, choosing his own path and we're endlessly probing to find out what sort of choices he's making.

Especially at lunch.

We ask every day and find out what he had (his school has a really wonderful set of choices daily) and it's always interesting, the choices he makes. For instance, today he selected to have an omelet and a muffin.

As we're marveling at the wonder of his new found independence, where he not WE choose his foods, we ask him "Now - are you sure you're making sure you're eating some fruits and vegetables every day?"

And he shakes his head in the affirmative, "Yes I have fresh fruit everyday."

"And vegetables? Are you eating SOME vegetables - finding some you like?"

"Well you SEE..." he explains slyly. "They don't actually SERVE Vegetables at my school.........."

Independence.

It must feel pretty good.

Fall Harvest Festivals - This Time Georgia Style

We're a day delayed going home. We had to have the car worked on to make it sea worthy (or whatever you call it). I had to go visit the physician for the evil freaking plantars fasciitis in my damn left foot that was basically making it so I couldn't STAND on that foot.

I'm not sure this time, how much it helped. I endured the DEVIL's very own handiwork of an injection AGAIN.....and this time.....eh- not so much relief. I'm not all that excited. It's better. But not BETTER!!!!

In other news, we made our first pilgrimage to a country fair in the land of cotton.

We saw the baby animals - satisfying our primal urge to know that the animals thrive. We drank the complimentary milk - also confirming that the animals thrive.

And we went to view the produce and canned goods and lo, it was good. We would survive another winter. And there was great rejoicing! So to celebrate the fact that our archetypal memories were satisfied about the state of the human condition for the coming winter, we went to the midway to celebrate.

And in our family, midway celebrations consist of eating deep fried foods (on sticks preferably). Here The Husband enjoys Deep Fried Banana Cream Pie and I have the traditional Snickers on a Stick. Deep Fried of Course. I am hoping for something more original at the Georgia State Fair. Have they run OUT of sweet confections to deep fry?
